New Zealand’s Michael Hendry has continued a remarkable comeback from a life-threatening illness by winning his second Japan Golf Tour event in Gunma Prefecture to the north and west of Tokyo.
Hendry, who just over twelve months ago was diagnosed with leukemia and underwent serious treatment to overcome a disease which not only threatened his golfing career but his life, returned to tournament golf in September of last year and won a small event in New Zealand.
He then returned to the PGA Tour of Australasia in October with several reasonable performances including a 4th place in a Webex Players Series event.
Hendry missed the cut in several events following the completion of the Australasian Tour but back on the Japan Golf Tour in April for the first time in eighteen months he missed the cut in the opening event of the season before finishing 16th at the prestigious Crowns and then winning the modified stableford event this weekend.
A former winner of the New Zealand Open and New Zealand PGA Championships, the Vic Open and runner-up in the Australian PGA Championship, the 44 year old led into the final round by four points and held off strong late challenges to win by one and claim the ¥10 million ($A100,000).
