Victorian Cameron Percy has the lead at the PGA Tour Champions event in Akron, Ohio, adding a second round of 66 to his opening 67 to be one ahead of Zach Johnson and Jerry Kelly at the Firestone Country Club.
52-year-old Percy is playing his 51st event on the PGA Tour Champions, but to date has yet to win, although he has recorded two 3rd place finishes and a runner-up placing in his starts to date.
One of the longest hitters on the PGA Tour Champions, Percy is well suited to the lengthy layout at the Firestone Country Club.
It was a weather-disrupted round on day two, and a break in play was required during the day. “It’s freezing in the locker room, so I put towels and wrapped myself up and kept moving, and I went to the gym and just kept making swings in the gym basically for about an hour,” said Percy. “By the time I went back out, my back didn’t hurt or anything like that; I didn’t freeze up, so it was good.”
Percy has just one bogey over his opening 36 holes and heads into the weekend, but he will be keen to finish the event off better than was the case last year at this venue when he also contended at the halfway stage before finishing well back. He did however, finish 7th in his debut in 2024.
Percy is relishing his time on the PGA Tour Champions, where he has safely retained his status each season.
“It’s awesome, it’s awesome,” said Percy. “Everything here is great. I played with a lot of these guys on Tour and then they’re all gone and now I’ve come back reunited with them. They’re way more friendlier and stuff because we’re at the end. So it runs very, very competitive, but very friendly as well if that makes sense.”
Stuart Appleby and Greg Chalmers are the next best of the Australasians, but they are at 1 over and eight shots from Percy’s lead.
